What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture stems from traditional Chinese medicine that disease results from a disruption of flow of qi (chi) and imbalances in the forces of yin and yang. Qi flows along channels of energy and run in regular patterns throughout the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these "energy rivers" is like a dam that backs up and causes obstruction in other areas.
The meridians can be influenced by applying needles, pressure, or heat to the acupuncture points in order to reestablish regular flow. There are as many as 20 meridians and more than 2,000 acupuncture points found laong these meridians. This form of treatment is considered primary care in Eastern medicine and is used to treat a wide variety of diseases.
In Western acupuncture methods, it is believed that acupuncture acts mainly to stimulate the nervous system and provide natural pain relief. In this way, acupuncture is used to treat musculoskeletal pain and postoperative pain and nausea.
Dr. Nguyen employs a mixture of Eastern and Western acupuncture methods. An acupuncture exam will reveal specific qualities of the patient's complaint which is used to choose acupuncture points based on Eastern yin and yang as well as wind/heat elements. Different methods can be used to stimulate these points, however unlike Eastern medicine which treats all conditions, we use acupuncture to stimulate the nervous system and reduce anxiety, pain, and spasm. Acupuncture can be effective as the only treatment used or as the support and adjunct to other medical treatments.
